Fujiya & Miyagi @ Columbia University

I checked out Fujiya & Miyagi last night at Columbia University. They are a new Disco-tronica group from Brighton, England, (relatively new in commercial talk; their first album was released in 2002 by Massive Advance Records). The sound system was glum, (damn college auditoriums!), the set was great, and the setting I could have done without. College auditorium shows aren’t my forte anymore. A clear and concise synopsis of this trio would be to say that they will make you dance. The rhythms are bursting, the progression is minimal, and the lyrics are effectively monotonous; making for some ideal conditions to lace up the kicks and succumb to a disco trance.

The trio, dressed in complete Puma gear, managed to create a sincere ripple effect with enough push to create an authentic kaleidoscope of revelers and dancers. I even took the liberty to grind up against some pizza boxes that were stacked by the loudspeaker I was near. Don't expect to see any Steve Ray solo guitar magic, or Iggy Pop stage antics, these guys are a bit timid, but they grooves are plenty nice.

The group is scheduled to rock the Mercury Lounge tonight, but sorry kids, the show is sold out. It’s their last gig before they head back to Europe. I'm sure with they'll be back soon. The kids at Columbia made them feel loved.
