Belle & Sebastian @ Amoeba: 20.3.2006

I found the aisles representing an overgrown field of musical wheat grass, about to sway in the breeze created by Belle & Sebastian.

On this Monday afternoon, Amoeba Records hosted a band rapidly ascending to the top of the charts; and even more astoundingly, a band that is really good. My relationship with Belle & Sebastian only goes back to Dear Catastrophe Waitress. From thence, I proceeded backward to discover a treasure i'm sure was discovered years ago by many hipsters and indie rockers way cooler than I will ever be. However, their latest album, "The Life Pursuit", is a magnetic escape to something fulfilling and joyful. I can't help but think of the word "glee" when I think of them.

The open-air-warehouse feel of Amoeba allowed for a sense of ¡libertad! within the rancid air space. I amuse myself at times to believe that the used section always smells a bit grungier than the "new" stuff. Belle & Sebastian washed all grime away.

These cats are fondlers of happiness and they can't help it. The vocal serenades are a countryside's charisma. Their charm is in their quirk. Whimsical and charming, Belle & Sebastian put on a 6 song set that illuminated their gentle thrash, and reiterated their shining rise to post-indie-folkism. I totally just made that up. Their casual demeanor and humorous grace allowed for a very easy experience. I can imagine how unnerving it must be, for a band to take up a stage in the middle of a record store, down the street from the famed Capitol Records, in the middle of the afternoon in Los Angeles, Ca; and play to 700 people who just so happened, "didn't have to work today."They had technical difficulties, but they worked it out.

In the end, 3pm @ Amoeba was a true delight, and a fond LA experience that goes into the history books. This may not compare to Coldplay @ the Troubadour for 10 bucks; or Rage Against The Machine @ the Roxy with a little known band named "At The Drive-In", (remember them fellas). Yet, this show still ranked up there as a fortunate encounter. Let's see what they'll bring July 6th at Hollywood Bowl. I'm sure it'll be something grand.

"The Life Pursuit" is now in stores.

Dude, my little sister was at that show. She called me later that night to tell me she ditched class ... then, just before I get mad, she spits out, "but it was for Belle & Sebastian, so like it's ok right?" Haha, then I had to think back on all the times I ditched class for things not nearly as cool as a free Belle & Sebastian show and I says, "yeah, I guess that's ok." She told me about a cute part where they all told their secret admirers which section they'd meet them at after the show.

And ... I never wrote about it (or published it anyway) but in BCN I boogied down with "Belle" at ... shit, don't remember the name of the club ... while "Sebastian" was spinning vinyl. She came off as a shy cat then ... that coulda been my patented headless chicken dancing though.

Oso,

hahaha...yeah they were talking about their admirers in context of what section they were standing in. "Ms. in the Rolling Stones section, i'll see ya in a bit..." They had a wonderful sense of humor and great charisma. I also saw Ben Harper last night for free. Then I went to Cinespace's 2 year anniversary and saw Carina Round. Great set! It's been a great week. Tonight i'm going to Snow Patrol @ the Troubadour. Gemma Hayes is opening. Should be fab.
